Best and worst for week ending 4th April 2010
Best. Number 7. ELLIE GOULDING – "STARRY EYED"
This week was difficult; there wasn’t much to choose from in the ol’ charts at all, and normally I’m not sure I would have rated this Ellie Goudling track the best. But c’est la vie. Generally I quite like Ellie Goulding’s music; she makes a brand of accessible ethereal pop that is charmingly sweet, soft and quirky. Instrumentally she subscribes to the not yet stale genre of new electro pop, but the most interesting aspect of all her performances is the way she uses her voice. She has, to my mind, quite interesting vocal techniques and a curious grain and timbre that are fairly unique within pop at the moment (and don’t even think of Diana Vickers, she is such a none event, and pales into insignificance next to Golding’s abilities). Essentially "Starry Eyed" is another fairly good track from Goulding, though I must say I feel "Guns and Horses" is infinitely better.
Worst. Number 11. FLORENCE / DIZZEE RASCAL – "YOU GOT THE DIRTEE LOVE"
Ugh! I am so sick of hearing this song everywhere! I don’t mind Florence or Dizzy separately, and together, on a technical, potential level this track is ok. Indeed, it is quite an interesting idea to combine Florence’s mellow pop with Dizzy’s hyper grime, and if they had chosen another of the tracks from Lungs I probably would have quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately they chose this bloody song, which I never ever liked, even in its original state as depressing 90s dance. I was disappointed when she release it as a quick release single, I was more disappointed when it became so gratuitously popular, and am now mildly infuriated as it seem to reach near ubiquity with its two separate versionings. Stop buying it now please. Get "Kiss with a Fist" instead. Now that’s a song.
